West Douglas County Fire Protection District is built on the belief that communities are strongest when neighbors stand ready to help one another. From the rugged foothills to the quiet neighborhoods of Sedalia, our district is protected by volunteers who give their time, talent, and courage to serve. Together, we provide fire, EMS, and rescue services grounded in professionalism and compassion. With every call answered and every life touched, we strive to honor the trust of the community we are proud to serve.

Our History

Sedalia Fire Department – Early History (Predecessor to West Douglas Fire) 1925-1980

The Sedalia Fire Department traces its origins back to the early 20th century, beginning with a pivotal fire in 1925 that destroyed a family home. With no running water and limited resources, the community realized the need for organized fire protection.

In response, residents—especially the women of the community—played a critical role in building the department. Through raffles, dances, quilting, and fundraisers, they raised enough money to purchase Sedalia’s first fire truck, initially outfitted with a bell from the old firehouse.

As a volunteer organization, the department relied heavily on community involvement. Women and children often assisted during the day when many men were working, even helping fight grass fires and support operations.

Leadership evolved over time, with key figures such as:

  • Harriett Beeman (President)
  • Mrs. Lethea Gelvin (Vice President)
  • Harriett Beeman Roberts (Secretary/Treasurer)
  • Arthur Beeman (Fire Chief, served until 1980)

Fundraising remained central to operations for decades, with creative efforts like raffling handcrafted items—sometimes raising significant funds (over $500 from a single raffle).

By the 1960s and 70s, the department continued as a tight-knit volunteer force, with local families deeply involved. Young boys often learned the trade by observing and assisting their fathers, helping carry on the tradition of service.
