Burn Permits

In Colorado, roughly 60% of wildfires over the past three decades have been caused by human activity. Because many Coloradans live in the wildland-urban interface and wildfires have grown more frequent and destructive, even permitted burns carry risk — which is why having a permit and following safe burning practices is so important.

Burn permits are required in the West Douglas District before conducting any open burning. This isn’t just a legal requirement—having a permit also helps prevent unnecessary fire department responses when neighbors report smoke in the area. How to Get a Burn Permit Obtaining a burn permit is a two-step process:

First, Complete the Colorado Open Burning Application

Second, Receive an approved permit from a West Douglas Fire official
